 Welcome!

Firstly, I'd like to welcome five students who have recently started English courses. Anna, Mariana and Regina are students and are learning in a group at beginner level.

Welcome too, to Caroline, who is a law student, and Jorge who works as a human resources manager.

Welcome back!

I'm happy to see Monica and Luiz Felipe back again after the break, and hope that Luiz enjoyed his trip to London.

Have a good trip!

After all the hard work trying to learn English, I hope that the following people enjoy the chance to put into practice what they have learnt.

Alcione and Carlos Augusto are currently in the USA, and have already sent me a postcard from Canada.

Cynthia leaves for London this week and will be spending a month there.

And last but not least, Marcio is emigrating to Australia. Marcio is a good example of what you can achieve with hard work and dedication. He started his course two years ago and completed Headway Intermediate. He then went on to study Upper-Intermediate. Although he didn't complete the Upper-Intermediate level, he went to Australia to look for a job, passed an interview (in English, naturally) and is now going there to live and work - a nice success story!

THIS INFORMATION IS NOT OUT OF DATE.

The financial crisis

The world financial crisis, apart from causing total panic among stockbrokers and investors, has led to a dramatic rise in the parallel exchange rate. I believe that the sharp rise in this rate is due more to greedy money exchangers wanting to make profit at the country's expense than to any fundamental problems in the Brazilian economy. Therefore, when calculating your bills for September and October, I will be maintaining my exchange rate calculation at 1.22. This will mean that there will be no rise in the cost of your classes as a result of "the crisis".

Did everyone enjoy the independence day long weekend? Viv had some excellent news on the Monday, which most of you will be aware of.

I may have to cancel some classes over the next two weeks to get some administration problems resolved. I apoligise in advance if you are affected, but hopefully everything will be resolved in a couple of weeks.

For the first time, instead of examples of student's English work, I have decided to include an article in Portuguese in this month's copy of the newsletter. The article came out in the Globo on the Sunday before last, and should be of interest to anyone learning English.
