Well, here’s the last edition of the Century! Sorry for the delay, and the fact that my students will only receive this issue by e-mail.

Holidays

Just to confirm what everyone has been told verbally. A friend of Viv’s from university is coming to Brazil for New Year’s Eve and for the first two weeks of January. Therefore, there won’t be any classes until the 18th of January. Everyone deserves a holiday, and the first two weeks of the new century seem to be the best time.

What’s new?

For all my students at home who will be on holiday in between the 18th of January and the Carnival, and have just one class per week, I’m offering one extra free class per week. This class will have to be arranged at off-peak times (during the day), and will only be available while Viv has space in his timetable. If you are able to have these extra classes, please arrive on time and cancel in advance, as you should do with your normal classes, if not I will not continue giving free classes to that student. The reason for offering these extra classes is to give the students who can normally only have one class a week the chance to make good progress with their courses, and hopefully finish them within one year. If you normally have two classes per week and will also be on holiday in January and February, I am also offering one extra, free class, but students having one class per week have priority. My apologies to my Shell students, but I’m afraid this offer is only available to students having classes at home.

The Quiz

Here are the answers to the quiz in last month’s newsletter:

1-C, 2-D, 3-B, 4-A, 5-D, 6-A (Set has 58 uses as a noun, 126 as a verb and 10 as a participle adjective. It takes 60,000 words for the Oxford English Dictionary to cover all its meanings). 7-B, 8-B, 9-C, 10-B, 11-D (the correct spelling of the other words is a) accommodate, b) idiosyncrasy and c) preceding.

Did anyone manage to get all ten questions correct?

Merry Christmas!

I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Viv will be going to Copacabana beach on New Year’s Eve. If you are there too, who knows, maybe we’ll meet.

Enjoy your holidays, and don’t forget to do the homework that Viv has given you before starting again next year.

To help create a Christmas and new year’s spirit I have put the words to two Christmas carols and a traditional New Year’s Eve song (everyone should link hands when they sing this). The new year’s song was written by a Scottish poet (Robert Burns 1759-1796). You can find out what it means at the site below:

Have fun, and see you all in January.

Viv.
