This will be the last edition of the Newsletter this year, and as you can see from the title, I'm not going to attempt to produce it monthly any more.

The response to my plea at the end of the last issue didn't generate any response from my students, so from now on I'll only write the Newsletter when I have important news for you.

Welcome back!

It was nice to meet one of my ex-students who lives abroad. Marcio was back in Brazil for a month after spending two years living and working in Australia (see editions 7 & 9). Some of my current students asked me if his English had improved and the answer is most definitely yes. Living and working in an English speaking country is by far the best way to improve your English. However, the problem is that unless you are transferred by your company, the only way to get a job is by already having a high enough level of English to pass the interview. To live and work abroad comfortably, you need to have completed the upper intermediate level, as I'm sure both Marcio and Raphael would agree.

My evaluation of Marcio's English is that he can now speak fluently, understand everything, and it is even possible to identify an Australian accent sometimes!

Welcome!

A warm welcome to Flavio, Mariana and Melissa, who have recently started English courses with Viv.

Good luck!

I wish the best of luck to Kilda, who was able to successfully complete the very difficult advanced level, and now dominates English effectively.

Prices in 2001 (out of date)

As my long term students know, Viv has not changed his prices since July 1999, when he changed the cost of classes from US$ to Reais. This year alone, Viv's rent has increased by 20% and bus and metro fares have gone up by 25%. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to absorb the current rate of inflation and continue to provide a high quality service for my students (including new technology, books for the library, etc).

Therefore, From the first of January 2001, the cost of classes will be R$22 per hour for classes at my flat, and R$25 for classes at the student's work or home. I'm sure that if Viv's prices are compared with those of an equally qualified native English teacher, you will find that the cost is still competitive.

What's new?

From December 2000, Viv's e-mail address is changing. The new address is:

If you'd like to see how well it's possible to write after two years in Australia, overleaf is the Olympic report from Marcio, as promised in the last edition. The words in bold are mistakes - can you correct them? Finally, I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
