Welcome!

I'd like to welcome Cristiana, Marcela and Patricia Cunha who have recently started English classes with Viv.

Congratulations!!

Managing to complete a level of English usually takes over a year of hard work and dedication. Therefore, I would like to congratulate Ana Paula on successfully completing the intermediate level. Ana Brandão also did very well to pass the upper-intermediate level in April this year.

Two more of my students will be taking end of course tests soon, so I hope that this section of the Newsletter will soon have some more entries!

Happy birthday!

Three of my students will be celebrating their birthdays in August - Ana Paula (20th), Patricia C (28th) and Juliana (30th). I wish them all a very happy birthday and all the best for the future. I'd also like to wish the same to Cristiana for the 25th July.

Vocab. tests :-((

Everyone will get a vocab. test in the next few weeks. If you didn't win one of Viv's t-shirts last time, now you've got the chance. Scores of 15 out of twenty and above will win a prize.

Please do a 2nd draft!

When receive back an essay and check it for mistakes, you will often find that Viv has written "Please do a second draft". This means that I would like you to write the composition out correctly, preferably on the computer.  The reason I ask you to do this is that the best way to improve your writing is to always make sure you produce a final version without any mistakes. Then you can use this version (draft) either as a basis for future work, or revision for any English tests you may do in the future. If you only do one version of a composition you will find that your written English improves much more slowly than it would if you took a bit more time to produce a final draft. If you are one of Viv's students who hasn't been doing final drafts, it's not too late. All you have to do is spend a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon on the computer making final drafts of your past essays, then send them to Viv attached to a message and he'll print them out and check that no mistakes have escaped. Then you can start a bank of your own compositions which you know are perfect.

Student of the month

The student of the month for July is Beatriz Revila. Bia works for Shell Brazil and is an example of how you can be successful at improving your English even under difficult conditions. She started having classes with Viv in September 2000 at Shell. However, when Shell moved to Barra in 2001, she had to stop having classes. Bia re-started in July 2002 and is now finishing the pre-intermediate level. Over the past few months she has worked very hard on improving her English and Viv hopes that she will soon be moving to the next level.
