Happy Birthday

November and December will see five student's birthdays:

Melissa, Ana and Mariliana celebrate their birthdays on the 11th, 20th and 21st of November, and both Adele and Vanessa's birthdays are on the ninth of December.

Holidays

There will be three days off in the next two months. Viv won't be working from the 9th to the 12th of October. The second of November is also a day off, but the weekend before this, Viv will be working normally. If you won't be able to have a class on Saturday the thirtieth or Monday the first of November, please let Viv know in advance. There is another long weekend from the 13th to the 15th of November and Viv will not be teaching on Saturday the 13th of November or on the following Monday.

Course News

Nearly everyone has passed the back on notebook tests; only two students still haven't passed it yet. The next activities programmed for your English course will be the past e-mail correction exercise in October and another vocabulary test in November.

What's New?

Viv has just started his DVD library. As you probably know, apart from being able to borrow books and magazines, Viv has a video club with over 120 films and programmes.

If you haven't got a VCR (video cassette recorder) but do have a DVD player, you can now borrow films from Viv on DVD.  However, if you borrow a DVD you must agree to the following conditions:

Upper-intermediate, advanced and proficiency students must watch the films in original version (English) without any subtitles.

Intermediate students must watch films with sound in English, but can also see subtitles in English.

Pre-intermediate students can watch films either in Portuguese with English subtitles or with the soundtrack in English and Portuguese subtitles. Of course, there's no way I can make you follow these guidelines, but those who don't do what I suggest will be wasting an opportunity to improve their English, breaking their promises and betraying Viv's trust! ;-)

You will find a list of the films in Viv's video club and a list of the DVD's currently available on page two of this edition of the Newsletter. In the future, Viv hopes to expand his DVD library considerably.

Student of the month

My student of the month for October is Verusya Correia. Vel is a dance and Pilates teacher and started having classes in July 2003. When she started she could hardly speak English at all and had a very limited vocabulary. She has been working through a pre-intermediate course and is now able to both understand and speak English quite well.

Her pronunciation has also improved a lot. Well done!
