Welcome!

A warm welcome to Juliana Fagundes, Magda Madeiros, Maira Greco, Maria Uchoa and Paula Chelles, who have started English courses with Viv in the last two months.

Welcome back!

Viv would also like to welcome back students who have returned after a break in classes. Joana Oliveira and Marliana Alcantara have re-started after a break of five months, and Elaine Bayma after nearly two years.

Happy Birthday!

Fernanda Taylor celebrates  her birthday on 14th March, and Viv would like to wish Paula Chelles and Isabel a happy birthday for the 2nd and 8th of April.

Holidays

Viv won't be teaching on the 25th and 26th of March because of the Easter holiday. Thursday the 21st of April is also a national holiday, so Viv will not be working between the 21st and the 24th of April.

Course News

Viv has more students now, so the free time he has between classes is sometimes shorter. If you arrive early for your class, please wait in the lobby downstairs - there's a comfortable sofa there. If you aren't sure whether Viv is free, just ask Sr. Miguel or Antonio (the doormen).

Unfortunately, Viv has had to terminate a student's language course due to 'NO SHOWS'. This is the first time this has happened (and hopefully the last!). If you can't come for a class for any reason, please send Viv a message by e-mail, if it's at very short notice, either call his mobile or fixed phone. If you're not sure what 'NO SHOW' means, or what Viv's rules are when this happens, look at edition 40 of the Newsletter on Viv's web site (The students+ Student Newsletters+ Back Issues 21+ and Newsletter 40 - Features).

The course activities for the next two months will be a vocabulary test at the end of March and the correction of past e-mail in April.

Carioca holidays! :-))

Cariocas have a reputation for taking things very easy between Christmas and Carnival. If you have returned  to classes after a two-month holiday, you must be prepared to work hard on recuperating your English. This is especially true for students at intermediate level and below.

DVD activity

Viv has invested over R$500 in buying DVDs for the video club. If you borrow a DVD but don't complete the writing activity, you will not be able to borrow any more DVDs from Viv until you have completed the DVD activity on another film which you have selected yourself from a video shop.

Student of the month

My student of the month for this edition is Fernanda Taylor Lopes. She started classes with Viv in November 1999 at the pre-intermediate level and after successfully completing two levels of English, is now preparing for the Cambridge First Certificate Examination.

Features

Newspaper article on English for Brazilian diplomats (can be viewed on Viv's web site).
