Welcome!

Viv would like to welcome Juliana Lucas who has just started an intermediate course.

Good luck!

I hope that everything goes well for Elaine and Melissa who are taking the Cambridge First Certificate Examination in December.

I wish the best of luck for the future to Maria Uchoa, who has terminated her English course.

Happy Birthday!

This will be the last edition of the Newsletter this year, so I'll take the opportunity to give everyone whose birthday is in January my best wishes. Happy birthday to Roberta, Flavia, Nara and Bia for the 8th, 14th, 20th and 25th respectively.

Holidays

Viv will be on holiday for two weeks at the end of the year. He won't be working between the 22nd of December and the 5th of January. If you will stopping your English classes for longer than this, please let Viv know. Viv has a Christmas present for all his students! Usually, when there's a longer holiday I organise an activity for everyone to do (reading a book, watching a film etc.). However, this year as a Christmas present for everyone, Viv's students won't be getting any homework to do for the holiday (unless, of course, you'd like some! :-)).

Course news

Nearly everyone has finished or is finishing the class film activity. Those of you who have already finished it will know that after watching the last part, Viv asks you to write a composition about the film. I would like everyone to do a final draft of this composition on the computer and send it to Viv. The best three compositions at pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper/advanced levels will feature in future editions of the Newsletter.

One of your class activities for December will be to write out Viv's angry pages correctly and in the last class of the year, we'll sing some songs! So far, only four students have failed their vocabulary tests and the top score is 17 out of 20, which has been achieved by two students (Flavia and Maíra).

What's new on the web?

If you've enjoyed the film activity you've done in class, you can find the worksheets and dialogues which Viv has prepared on his web site:

www.vivquarry.com

Just click on 'The teacher' link, then on 'Teachers' resources and guestbook'. After that, choose 'Teachers' materials', then 'Using DVD in class'. The worksheets are under 'Example of a DVD activity'.

Student of the month

My student of the month for this edition is Flavia Campbell.

She has only been having classes for four months, but in that time she has made exceptional progress. It's rare to see such dedication and motivation to learn, and the result is that her English is now considerably better than it was a short time ago.
