Welcome!

Viv would like to welcome Andrea, Cleunice, Cristiana, Cristiane, Cristine, Paula and Valeria, who have started English courses with Viv since the last Newsletter.

Good luck!

Viv would like to wish the best of luck to those who have suspended or terminated courses. They include: Agatha, Ana Beatriz, Consuelo, Juliana S, Renata M and Viviane. Viv hopes that it will be possible for these ex-students to return to classes again at some time in the future.

Even more good luck!!

Viv hopes that Fernanda will be successful in the Cambridge First Certificate in English test, which she is taking in June.

Happy birthday!

There are four birthdays to celebrate in June. Lucimar on the 3rd, and Flavia, Paula and Viv, whose birthdays are all on the fifth of June!

In July, four of Viv's students will be enjoying their birthday cakes: Marcelle (11th), Tita (17th), Renata P (18th) and Cristiana (25th). Last but not least, Anne's birthday will be on the 28th of August.

Holidays

The Corpus Christi holiday is on the 3rd of June, so Viv will be taking a long weekend including his birthday. Therefore, there won't be classes on the 4th or 5th of June. The next holiday, as far as Viv is aware, will be on Tueday the 7th of September (Independence Day).

The World Cup

Viv will not be working when the Brazilian and English football teams are playing in the World Cup in South Africa in June. As a result of this, classes at the following times will be cancelled:

Saturday the twelfth 3-6pm (England v the USA); Tuesday the fifteenth 3-6pm (Brazil v North Korea); Friday the eighteenth 3-6pm (England v Algeria); Wednesday the twenty-third 10-1pm (England v Slovenia); Friday the twenty-fifth 10-1pm (Brazil v Portugal). Any further cancellations will depend on whether Brazil and England classify in first or second place in their respective groups. On page two of this Newsletter you will find the possible dates of matches involving both countries depending on their success in the first round.

Student of the month

Viv's 'student of the month' for this edition of the Newsletter is Cristiane Braun. Cris works as a dentist and started classes in March. In more than 15 years teaching English privately in Rio, very few students have worked harder, or made more real progress in improving their English than Cristiane. Well done, Cris!!!! :-)

Features

As well as the timetable for televised World Cup matches in the eighth round, quarter finals, semi-finals, third place play-off and World Cup final, the features section of this month's Newsletter includes football vocabulary for Portuguese speakers. You can find more football vocab. in edition number five of the Newsletter, which can be viewed by selecting 'Back issues' on Viv's web site.
