Welcome!

Viv would like to welcome Juliana, Monique and Simara, who have started English courses since the last Newsletter.

Good luck!

The best of luck for the future to Luciana L, Lilian and Fernanda M.

Congratulations!

Well done to Mariane for completing the pre-intermediate level and Luciana who completed the intermediate level before moving to live and work in the USA.

Happy birthday!

Three of Viv's students celebrate their birthdays in October: Marina (the 7th), Marcele (the 10th) and Amanda (the 23rd). In January, Paty R celebrates her birthday on the 2nd and Roberta on the 8th.

Holidays

Viv will not be working on Saturday the 12th of October (Our Lady of Aparecida) or on Saturday the 2nd of November (Remembrance Day). Viv will also be taking a long weekend in November, so there won't be any classes on the 15th or 16th (Proclamation of the Republic Day). The Christmas and New Year's break this year will be from the 22nd of December to the 5th of January.

Course news

There will be a back of notebook test for everyone before the end of the year. Viv will also be preparing a reading activity and his past e-mail activity.

Students at the upper-intermediate level and above will go through their phrasal verbs and prepositions vocabulary cards one more time before the end of the year. This activity takes longer to complete in class if you don't go through these cards by yourself sometimes. Doing this regularly is, in my opinion, the best way to dominate these very difficult areas of the English language.

Students at any level can use vocab. cards to help learn new words. There is an explanation of how to use these cards on Viv's 'Learning vocabulary' worksheet (some techniques for learning vocabulary 2 & 3) on his web site. You can find it at here:    http://www.vivquarry.com/wkshts/learnvoc.html

Everyone will also eliminate their past Viv's angry page expressions one last time.

Student of the month

My 'Student of the month' for this edition of the Newsletter is Roberta Megale (she was also my student of the month in edition 54). She started classes at the intermediate level in 2004 and in spite of the fact that she had to travel abroad a lot on business, she was able to complete this level successfully. She is now coming to the end of the upper-intermediate level and will take the Cambridge First Certificate Examination, which will give her an internationally recognised qualification.

Features

Viv had to change his conditions for classes this year. Page two of this edition has the latest version of these conditions for classes written in Portuguese. If you're not sure about anything ask Viv.
