Speaking activity - Ask the students:

What happened in the first part of the film? (McMurphy arrives at the mental hospital)

What happened before Mc Murphy arrived at the mental institution? (mime sb putting their tongue out for medication)

Tell me about the Indian. (Deaf and dumb)

What happened after Mc Murphy arrived? (mime playing cards - showing Martini a 'special' card)

What did Dr Spivey and Mc Murphy talk about? (mime fishing, write 'why' on the board)

What happened in the group therapy session?

 

While the DVD is loading and the 'copyright' warning is on: tell the students to try not to read the subtitles. Ask them to watch the actor's mouth to try to understand what they are saying.

 

Go to the film main menu, select 'Jump to a scene' and select scene 6 (Basketball lesson)

without subtitles.

 

After Mc Murphy spits out the pill, change to students' native language or English (intermediate+).

 

After Mc Murphy says 'Anyone want any of it?' before trying to lift the water fountain - No subtitles.

 

Stop the film when the radio in the Nurse's station appears.

 

Post-viewing activity: Is it good to give patients drugs in a mental hospital? Why /not? Is group therapy useful? What are the advantages and disadvantages of patients playing sports like basketball and games like cards and Monopoly? Will McMurphy see the World Series baseball game? How? (if any students have seen the film, ask them not to tell everyone what happens)
