Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to Vanessa who's birthday was on the 9th, and to Paula Galhardo on the 27th of December.

Welcome!

I would like to welcome Flavio, who has recently started a course with Viv.

Welcome back!

Daniela, who used to work for Shell and has now moved to Light, will be re-starting classes with Viv in January.

What's new?

Viv has now settled into to his new flat in Gavea. His telephone number is the same as it was before, and he now has a mobile phone - you'll find the number at the bottom of his e-mail messages.

Viv has produced a student ID card, which you will need if you want to use the car park in front of his house at a reduced rate. The ID card is available to all students; just bring Viv a passport sized photo (3x2) and he'll make the card for you.

Christmas holiday

Classes will be suspended for the week beginning on the twenty-fourth of December and ending on the second of January 2002. If you only have one class per week, I will send you your bill by e-mail. Students having two classes per week will be given their bill during the penultimate class. I would be grateful if all bills could be paid before the Xmas and New Year's Eve holidays. However, if for some reason this is not possible, just let Viv know.

What's new on the web?

If you need to find the location of any address in Rio, Niterio, São Paulo, or Vitoria. Or to plan a route between any two cities in Brazil, look at Viv's travel page (under the 'Practice your English' link). You will need Internet Explorer to use the program which apart from showing you where a street is, also calculates the best route to take between two points.

There is also a similar program for addresses in Britain and a map of the London Underground. If you are doing a course which is preparing you for the Cambridge First Certificate in English test, I have put a past paper on the web site (under the 'Teacher / Teachers' resources' link). If you would like to attempt the test, send the answers to Viv and I'll send you the result by e-mail.

Student of the month!

From now on, every edition of the Newsletter will focus on one of my students who has made particularly impressive progress over the past few months. This month's  focus is on Isabel Ponde Castro Faria.

Isabel is a law student who started her course at pre-intermediate level  in Feb. 2001. Since then, through hard work and very good attendance, she has made very impressive progress, with a score of 90% in her last progress test, WELL DONE!

Features

An article by Micheal Jacobs, an English teacher working in Rio, who seems to understand a lot about teaching and learning here. Another article by him appeared in edition no. 7.
