 Welcome!

A warm welcome to Ana Lucia Brandão and Franciane Pimentel, who have recently started courses with Viv.

Good luck!

I wish Ana Paula, who has recently finished her English course, the best of luck for the future.

Congratulations!

May has been an excellent month, with three students passing their end of course tests and moving on to the next level. Fernanda and Isabel have both successfully completed the difficult pre-intermediate level, and Melissa passed her final test for the intermediate level.

Happy Birthday!

A late happy birthday to Franciane whose birthday was on the 18th of May. I would also like to wish Cristina Turnes and Marilena Petros happy birthday for the 1st of June and 3rd of July respectively.

Viv won't be organising anything special for his birthday this year. However, on Saturday the 8th of June he will be going to the Queen's Legs pub in Rua Cicero Goes Monteiro after 9pm. The pub is on the Lagoon near the entrance to Tunel Rebouças (I can give your a map if you don't know where it is). It would make me very happy to see as many of my current and ex-students there who can come! I will either be in a very happy mood or wanting to drown my sorrows as it will be the day after England play against Argentina in the World Cup!

Holiday

Viv will not be working  on the 30th & 31st of May, or on the 1st of June. Everyone deserves a holiday every so often!

Cost of classes

Those students who were being charged the old price for classes, due to recently starting classes or increasing the number of hours (see Newsletter 25), will all be charged the new price in June.

Test time again!

The results for the April vocab. tests were generally very good as only 4 students failed (7 failed the December tests). In June everyone will get a back of notebook test.

What's new?

In Edition 24 I mentioned that students could bring a recordable CD-ROM, and I would record the songs done in class. I recommend a re-recordable blank cd. These are more expensive, but can be written various times, so you can add songs as you do them in class.

Student of the month

This month's focus is on Samara Oliveira, who works for Abril Publishers and is doing an upper-intermediate general English course. She has made excellent progress in improving her English since starting her course in June 2002.

Features

There is now a link to a site with an encyclopedia on my web site. This month's feature is a 'twentieth century quiz'. Answer the ten questions using the words in bold. The first correct answer received by e-mail wins a prize.
