Welcome back!

A warm welcome to Biatriz Revilla, who suspended classes in September 2001 and has recently re-started classes.

Good luck!

I'm sorry to say that I will be losing two students - Barbara and Maria Eugenia. Barbara, who started her course in February 2001, is going to the USA to do a doctorate in economics in Chicago. Maria Eugenia started having classes in March 2001 and is going back to live in Portugal. Good luck for the future, I'm going to miss both of you.

Happy Birthday!

Birthday greetings to Samara (14th August), Ricardo (31st August) and Sara (20th September).

Web site news

I'm happy to announce that this month, Viv's web site registered its 1000th visitor! The counter is at the bottom of the home page and if you click on it, a window will open with a range of information on who, where & when the site was visited.

Holiday

Viv will not be working on Saturday the seventh of September.

Tests :{ and e-mail

Only five students failed the back of notebook tests and four people failed the vocab. test (not the same students).

There won't be any more tests until the next batch of vocab. tests in October, but Viv will be asking everyone who has sent e-mail to him with mistakes, to produce a second draft of the messages. The past messages will be corrected in class, and then a copy of the uncorrected messages sent to the student by e-mail. Please don't forget to make the changes to your past messages and send the corrected version back to Viv. I believe that it is one of the best ways to improve the quality of your informal written English.

What's new?

Both the Globo and SBT often show films with captions in either English or Portuguese. If your TV has got the 'Closed Captions' and 'SAP'   functions, with some films, you can watch the films in English and read a translation in Portuguese. It's possible to switch off the captions and just hear the English when you want!

Other channels which sometimes show films with captions are Telecine and USA. I recommend always leaving the captions on.

Student of the month

The student of the month for this edition of the Newsletter is Elaine Bayma. She has been having classes with Viv since August 1999. She has successfully completed the intermediate level and is now preparing to take the Cambridge First Certificate exam. In spite of being very busy preparing for a master's degree, her attendance has been excellent and homework has always been completed well.

Features

This month's Newsletter features compositions on Education in Brazil and Britain by the two students who will be leaving next month.
